Very Important Things: Running Backs Edition
There’s been a lot to digest over the past 48 hours or so, as so far the 2010 offseason has proven to be far more dramatic than previously imagined. From sensationalist reports regarding Seneca Wallace as a new franchise savior to Derek Anderson verbally running over legions of Browns faithful, the past couple days have been nothing short of eventful.
Speaking of which, allow me to weigh on everyone’s favorite scandal.
Anderson Apologizes for Ripping Fans
“The fans are ruthless and don’t deserve a winner,” Anderson wrote. “I will never forget getting cheered when I was injured. I know at times I wasn’t great. I hope and pray I’m playing when my team comes to town and (we) roll them.”
“I’m looking forward to starting a new chapter in my life.”
Here’s my take – who cares? No one likes a long goodbye. And really, DA – you “hope and pray…you’re playing”? How inspired.

And So It Goes…Seneca Wallace Edition
Well, that escalated quickly.
Just mere hours after Mike Holmgren and Tom Heckert made their first signature franchise move by acquiring Seneca Wallace, the buzz among Berea is thicker than Tim Tebow’s career-making NFL Combine calf density.
And while Wallace was merely another QB name bandied about this time yesterday, today’s he’s a Browns and possibly quite more…

Free Agency 2010: Remember Me Edition
Is it just me, or did yesterday’s free agent signings of Tony Pashos and Scott Fujita remind you of this time last year, when Eric Mangini went on a similar Big Lots shopping spree, albeit one that didn’t move far from the Jets Bargain Bin? The 2010 Pashos signing is indeed an upgrade over the 2009 version, one John St. Clair. Also, isn’t Fujita a kind of Eric Barton 2.0?
Not that I’m complaining, mind you. I’ll take Pashos at right tackle over St. Clair anyday. Actually, I would even consider Brady Quinn over St. Clair at this point in the veteran “tackle’s” career.
By the by, that was my obigatory QB reference of the day. Feel free to discuss amongst yourselves. Read the rest of this entry »
Sunday Roundup: Pillars and Plunderers Edition
Is there anything better for a media nerd such as myself to wake up to on a Sunday morning in early March, during an non-traditionally moribund free agency season than articles such as the ones that follow? Although, admittedly I’m more of a chaser of news than reporter, it makes me wonder just who exactly the reporters are in this city.
While I certainly can’t describe myself as such, at least I don’t throw out terms like “insider.” Read the rest of this entry »
Saturday Best: Taking the Fun Out of It Edition
Perhaps the best free agent signing the Browns could have made involved a player who never really wanted to be a free agent, or anything but the virtual “face of the franchise.” In the case of Josh Cribbs, for the first time in years, rational actions have ruled the day, as the Browns lock up their “spiritual force” for another three seasons.
And while no one was looking forward to – or probably even seriously planning for – a Browns future without Cribbs, perhaps the greatest part of this narrative is that it finally appears that the organization has someone who is clearly in charge. Read the rest of this entry »
Friday Roundup: Easily Entertained Edition
Is it just me, or did free agency kind of sneak up on our football-less calendar? I realized that March had begun – and with it an abundantly plentiful analysis of what some refer to as the Underwear Olympics – or, others simply call it for what it is – the annual deconstruction of the modern athlete/NFL actuary committee meeting.
Anyway, this and perhaps the natural lull of positive reporting regarding the upcoming labor impasse has kind of placed the 2010 free agency season into a much less traditional context…one of ambivalence….far removed from the normal media frenzy that surrounds virtually all NFL offseason events.
Because of the limited nature of free agency heading into an uncapped year, and as a result of dozens of would-be free agents carrying a steep draft pick price tag for their services, this is a time of the year that even the NFL hype machine will have a hard time selling to the public.
Unlike vertical leaping ability and various feats of strength. Read the rest of this entry »
Thursday Roundup: Coming and Going Edition
Lost amidst the calf density readings and 40-yard dash false starts of the past days is a story of some consequence….although it may feel like an afterthought. The release of Hank Fraley may not register more than a quick blip on the collective radar of Browns Nation, but it’s worth re-telling the story of how the veteran center nearly saved the team from suffering an even more complete catastrophe in 2006.
Fraley ‘Shocked’ to Learn of Release
After losing newly acquired LeCharles Bentley in a freak practice accident that can pretty much only happen in Berea, the Browns turned to local favorite Bob Hallen, who then realized that playing professional football wasn’t really his thing. Or, in other words, the Browns – already featuring one of the weakest offensive lines in the league, remember, this was pre-Joe Thomas and Eric Steinbach – were essentially stuck.
Enter Fraley to the rescue. Read the rest of this entry »
Wednesday Roundup: Not So Fast Edition
From now on, I’m going to measure the impact of all of my posts based solely on time/distance equations. Or, how long did it take you to read that? Could I have finished it a tenth of a second quicker? Am I slowing you down?
As you may already know, precious tenths of seconds and typed letters could be the difference between a top-10 Browns website and one that is a mere afterthought…nevermind.
And so it goes…the Scouting Combine fallout continues… Read the rest of this entry »
Gym Class Heroes: Joe Haden Edition
It’s articles like these, or more correctly, the inane speculation that follows that makes me realize how much I hate the Scouting Combine. Just yesterday, wasn’t Florida’s Joe Haden considered both a top-ten draft pick, as well as a target of the Browns at Number Seven?
And a day later, suddenly he’s not? What happened? Did he lose a major limb in a tragic squat thrust accident? Read the rest of this entry »
The Case for Eric Berry
I’ve been down this road before – actually, quite a few times – trying to figure out just who the best prospect is for the Browns as they currently hold the seventh overall pick in next month’s draft. Although I’m usually never this indecisive, I figure that because our franchise has so many different holes to plug heading into 2010, it doesn’t hurt to examine all the different possibilities that may exist in a little less than two months.
And change my mind about a thousand times in the process.
How’s that for a justification? Also, considering we have another eight weeks to reflect on this most critical draft, I’m probably only halfway through my draft scenarios.
So today, let’s take a look at a player who almost makes too much sense for the Browns at Number Seven.
Almost… Read the rest of this entry »
