The Formula: Green Bay Edition

Let’s take yet another look at Saturday’s night mirth-quake, which easily ranks among the top ten games played by the Browns over the past few seasons.  If you recall, I devised a rather simple technique for charting the overall progress of our still rebuilding team….one that does not overly rely on actual wins.

Meaning that this….

….was deemed irrelevant late Saturday night, considering that the Browns won.

Two Afternoons After – Browns-Packers Edition

The results are in and so far, so good.  After three touchdowns in the first half of Saturday night’s preseason opener – three more than the team scored for much of last season – an odd bit of optimism is beginning to arise in Berea this week.  Compared to this time last year, Browns fans are virtually walking on air – which is a far cry from last year’s opener.

So with all this sentiment sweeping about, let’s take a closer look at the game that was.

Remember all that stuff about Holmgren past and present?  Perhaps I was onto something….

Browns-Packers Recap: In the Beginning Edition

The 2010 season has officially begun – for the most part – and our Browns delivered something quite precious in a game that was entertaining for about a half….or maybe just a quarter or so.  Beyond the usual “getting to know you” introduction that traditionally marks the Browns’ first preseason game, I think a clearer picture developed of what this 2010 team could become.

Although the melange of rookies mixed with a host of injuries have somewhat clouded the ultimate September vision of this team, it’s obvious that the 2010 Browns’ fortunes may be greatly shaped by the arrival of such veterans as Jake Delhomme, Sheldon Brown, Ben Watson, Scott Fujita and Seneca Wallace….for better or worse.

Having said all that – let’s take a closer look.     Read the rest of this entry »

Browns-Packers Preview

Just in time for the start of the preseason, Cleveland’s dark doppleganger in the form of Green Bay emerges – to once again poke their fingers at the shifty, revamped mass that are the Browns.  In an NFL version of a tale of two cities, Green Bay is the chain of hope that Cleveland could one day wrap around their beefy necks.

The similarities between the two franchises are striking – at least from two polar opposite approaches.  First, the natural connection of history between Green Bay and Cleveland are obvious – as each team clearly represents the glory days of 1950’s and 1960’s era football.  In terms of championship legacies, Green Bay peaked in time to usher in the Super Bowl era, while the Browns’ brilliant title run existed in those now forgotten days before the big game was a worldwide spectacle.

In recent times, the Packers have existed among the top realms of the league, enjoying a 2009 playoff run, while the Browns have….well, you know.    Read the rest of this entry »

The Formula

With the Browns’ first preseason game sneaking up on us all, I thought I would try to accomplish three things this afternoon.

First, how about a roundup?  In what has been a fabulously slow week of news emanating from Berea, we have learned the following items:  Read the rest of this entry »

The Future Is….Next Year….Maybe

We’ll get back to this tomorrow – or in other words – where are you now Mike Lombardi?

Haden Thinking Less, Playing Better

At the conclusion of minicamp rookie cornerback Joe Haden admitted he was thinking too much about what he was supposed to do rather than just doing it, which caused him to react slowly.

Haden looked sharper during the first week of training camp while working with the second team defense.

However, for today, new addition to Cleveland Reboot, Brian Heise offers us his take on the “other” rebuilding project currently underway in the city.  Oh wait – the “other” “other” rebuilding project…

The Future is…Next Year…Maybe

Wednesday Roundup: Changing Times Edition

Now – it’s official…meaning that the Browns are still rebuilding.

Tuesday Roundup: Crime, Punishment and Stupid Polls Edition

This just hasn’t been the best of weeks to be a Browns defensive back.  After Brandon McDonald’s controversial scrimmage endzone flip, followed by the revelations of his past Twitter usage, both of which surely drew a reprimand from Eric Mangini – reserve corner Gerard Lawson has now contributed to the summer festivities.

Browns coach Eric Mangini met with Lawson and said they had a “good conversation.” Mangini did not say if Lawson apologized.   Read the rest of this entry »

Worst Week Ever: Brandon McDonald Edition

The Browns’ first inter-squad scrimmage of the season has came and went.  Among the highlights was an impressive defensive showing – or was it an offense still trying to figure out where all the moving parts are supposed to go?

Either way, it’s rather obvious at this point on the calendar that the Browns desperately need their young wideouts to emerge in 2010.  Considering the tenuous nature of Jake Delhomme’s attempted career revitalization plan (but again, he’s still a far better option than last year’s starters), this offense simply can’t sustain itself with another year of pre-historic passing.

But I digress…after all, we still have four preseason games to debate the merits of the quarterbacks.  Can you feel the excitement?

And speaking of headlines – of the future sort – at least one Browns’ player made an impact over the weekend.   Read the rest of this entry »

The Not So Invisible 70’s

The following is a special from Reboot reader, Keith Vlasak.

The 1960’s Browns ran a little bit into the 1970’s.  The Browns were still pretty good, that is — and maybe benefited from the switch to the AFC, too.  So, for discussion’s sake, I’m sort of starting the 70’s decade with the loss to the undefeated Miami Dolphins 14-20 at the end of the 1972 season.  Why?  The Browns lost by 6 points against the only NFL team to go unbeaten and untied through the entire season and playoffs … and Mike Phipps threw 5 interceptions in the game, including one in the closing minutes when the Browns were driving.

Do you know who the Browns took with their first pick in the 1970 draft (with the pick they got in trade for Paul Warfield)?  Mike Phipps.  Do you know who the Steelers drafted with the No. 1 overall pick in the 1970 draft?  Terry Bradshaw.    Read the rest of this entry »
