Thursday Roundup: Blood and Mayhem Edition

It’s late July in Berea, which can mean only one thing…

If Eric Mangini is still employed as head coach of the Browns – look for the knives to come out.  Considering that Mangini is still in charge – as inconvenient as this may be to some – the annual sacrifice begins.

First, from the usual suspects….

PFT – Patriots Gutting Reminders of Past Glory

This is the type of move that new coaches sometimes make, breaking from the past, inspiring hatred among the tradition-loving locals.

Damn!  Did you see how PFT did that?   Read the rest of this entry »

Wednesday Feedback: The Importance of Leroy Kelly

Running Back Week continues here at Cleveland Reboot, as several readers accepted the challenge I laid out yesterday – where I asked why I should care about Browns’ Hall of Famer Leroy Kelly.

Tuesday Feedback: Reader Edition

There’s nothing that brings out the passion of the Browns’ fan base more than a little running back back debate.  Blame it on our legacy as a long-ago champion – the moments of which were defined by the game’s greatest back, but in Cleveland – we take our running backs seriously.

And by the dozen – which explains the idea behind yesterday’s post….

Historically Speaking: Montario Hardesty Edition

The whole point was that rookie back Montario Hardesty is indeed the next in line to become the “next” great Browns’ back – which isn’t exactly a badge of honor, considering all those who came before him during the expansion era.

Or in other words – today’s offseason hype can easily turn into tomorrow’s Lee Suggs.   Read the rest of this entry »

Historically Speaking: Montario Hardesty Edition

Depending on your perspective, the signing of Montario Hardesty is either the only happening on a slow Monday – or marks the beginning of a compelling new chapter in Browns’ history.

Browns and Hardesty Agree to Terms

On one hand Hardesty appears to be the most NFL-ready back the Browns have unearthed in years – but on the other – who exactly is he being compared to?

After all, the franchise whose legacy was cemented by the game’s greatest running back and current pseudo-shaman has not produced much of a ground attack in say….just a shade over forty years.

Of course, there have some blips along the way.   Read the rest of this entry »

Sunday Roundup: Swap Meet Edition

After months of painful waiting, a certain form of training camp has begun, yet the news coming from Berea has been paper thin – or perhaps even recycled.

If you know what I mean….

Schudel on Dave Razzano

Dave Razzano is a name unfamiliar to most fans, but the former NFL scout for the 49ers, Cardinals and Rams is well-respected around the league, so when he has something to say about the Browns, it’s worth paying attention.

Wait a minute….this sounds familar – and oddly dated.    Read the rest of this entry »

Camp Primer – Rookie Edition

Talk about being ahead of the curve.  In hopefully a harbinger of things to come, the Browns have ushered in the annual summer rite of passage - opening their team’s rookie camp a few days before every other team in the league.  Or, in other words – at least for the time being – the Browns have finished first in something NFL-related.

Perhaps we should just stop while we’re ahead.

Anyway, with the dawning of rookie camp comes both an intriguing set of possibilities, as well as more than a few questions.

Let’s take a look….   Read the rest of this entry »

Friday Roundup: Place Your Bets Edition

With Browns’ training camp only a few hours away - at least the rookie variety – the news is beginning to heat up around Berea.  Oh wait – did I say “news?”  I meant fluff-laden and baseless innuendo.  I get those confused all the time.

From the Doom and Gloom Desk, comes this….

Thursday Roundup: Reader Choice Edition

Stuff from all over today, as I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the Ringless contest entries, but first – like a gift from the email Gods on a slow news day, two Reboot readers delivered the goods.

First, from Kirk Reynolds comes a most welcome, if not foreign topic – an item regarding those suddenly resurgent Browns.

Longtime NFL scout Dave Razzano has some kind words for our beloved franchise – and manages to avoid tripping over clumsy cliches such as “long suffering”, “LeBron James” and “Eric Mangini on the hot seat.”

But first, you may be asking yourself – just who is Dave Razzano?

The Numbers Game: Part Two – Career Revival Edition

In perhaps the least surprising piece of offseason news to unfold in years, Eric Mangini has affirmed that Jake Delhomme is the team’s starting quarterback.  Depending on which camp you fall into, you’re either bored to tears or crying that you can’t write about a QB controversy for the next two months.

Or, you’re a rational thinker who clearly understands that NFL teams don’t pay backup quarterbacks seven million dollars.

Mangini – It’s Jake Delhomme’s Job to Lose

Anyway, all of this “talk” means one thing – the success of the 2010 Browns will largely be dictated by whether Delhomme can return to his past Pro Bowl form – or continue his long slide into oblivion.

Although this appears to be a huge gamble – considering the Browns’ tenuous state of improvement shown late last season – it is encouraging to think that Delhomme offers a huge upgrade over last year’s available options.

Also, since Delhomme represents the rare QB who possesses some veteran upside, it’s worth taking a look at past history.

Having said that, let’s examine a few veteran QB’s who found themselves in a situation much like the one Delhomme is set to enter in 2010.    Read the rest of this entry »

2010 Ringless Contest Winners

While choosing to ignore Mike Lombardi’s summer filler - and resisting the temptation to do an Inception-themed levels post, today announces the crowning of Cleveland Reboot’s Ringless contest.

Although, because I am equal parts petty and completely distracted, I have to at least offer the following:

According to coaches around the league, Browns first-round pick Joe Haden has not been very impressive in camps and might not have enough speed to play corner. Maybe all that talk about some in the organization wanted to take Kyle Wilson over Haden was true.

1.  “Coaches around the league” does not exactly refer to the ones who were actually a part of the Browns’ offseason camps.

2.  Haden is fast – he’s also a rookie trying to figure out a complex NFL defense.  Most people walk before they run.  Babies do it all the time.

3.  The inclusion of Kyle Wilson’s name further solidifies Lombardi’s pro-Mike Tannenbaum and anti-Eric Mangini stance – one that grew old sometime last October.

4.  If you love movies – and/or resent the fact that Hollywood has become too scared to support original filmmaking, then go see Inception.

5.  Otherwise, then just sit on your couch and wait for the next Transformers.

Off my soapbox and onto the awards.    Read the rest of this entry »
